How to Apply for a Non-Immigrant Visa

  1. Introduction: Learn more about the non-immigrant visa process
    What a visa is, whether you need a visa, whether to apply in person, categories of visas.
  2. Access and file your online Visa Application Form
    The DS-160 web-based visa form must be completed online. You must print your confirmation page and bring this to your interview.
  3. Gather Supporting Documentation
    Find out which documents should accompany your non-immigrant visa application, e.g. a self-addressed envelope with sufficient stamps for registered return of your passport by mail.  Please, do not send any supporting documents in advance of your interview.
  4. Pay the Non-Refundable Visa Application Fee
    This payment is mandatory and is not refundable in cases when the receipt is not used, or when the visa application is refused or abandoned.  Applicants must bring proof of payment on the day of interview.  If you do not bring  proof of payment and choose to pay again at the Consulate, or at any other place, the unused payment will not be refunded. To pay this fee please deposit the required amount in euro, into our account #NL29DEUT0515483184, with Deutsche Bank and bring your receipt. Alternatively you can bring your Dutch PIN-card (debit card) for payment at the Consulate. Note that you can only pay the application fee by PIN. If you have to pay for the issuance of your visa you can only pay in cash or by credit card! More ....
  5. Have Your U.S. Format Photo Taken
    The required format is 5 x 5 Cm. Dutch format is not acceptable!
  6. Make an Appointment
    For your visa interview at the Consulate General in Amsterdam. 
  7. Submit Your Application In Person
    On your designated appointment date. Please read our Access and Security Instructions as certain items, such as electronic equipment, is not allowed into the Consulate.
  8. Receive your passport and visa by mail
    This usually takes 3-4 business days, but can take longer. The Consulate General cannot be held responsible for extra costs due to changing tickets or rebooking flights if delivery is delayed. We therefore strongly urge you NOT to purchase tickets until you have received your visa and passport in the mail.

  • Get the right picture!
    You must bring a U.S. format passport photo. U.S. format means 5 x 5 Cm. (2"x2"). It must be a very recent photo and have a white background. Other format photos or photos older than 6 months are NOT ACCEPTABLE.

    And PLEASE do NOT forget to bring your return envelope with sufficient postage for registered mail, so we can return your passport once we have issued your visa.

    When you need a visa you will have to visit the Consulate by appointment. Bringing items that cannot be brought into the Consulate, e.g. cell phones, laptops, knives of all kinds, etc., will delay your entering the building or may even lead to cancellation of your appointment.
