Deputy Chief of Mission Jason P. Hyland

Biography

Jason P. Hyland became Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Canberra, in May 2010. Mr. Hyland is a member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor.

 Prior to this assignment, Mr. Hyland was the Director of the Office of South Central European Affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, U.S. Department of State, 2008-2010. He served as Provincial Reconstruction Team Leader in Ninewa, Iraq’s second-largest province, in 2007-2008 and was based in Mosul.  He received a Superior Honor Award for his work in Iraq. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Baku, Azerbaijan, from 2004-2007.  Other previous assignments include: Special Assistant, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Department of State; Principal Officer, U.S. Consulate, Fukuoka, Japan, representing American interests in western Japan, and; Political Counselor, U.S. Embassy Kyiv, Ukraine.  He received a Group Superior Honor Award from the Department of State for serving on the first Embassy team that entered Kobe, Japan, in February 1995 to assist Americans after the tragic earthquake.  From 1992-1994, Mr. Hyland worked in the Office of Independent States and Commonwealth Affairs, Bureau of European Affairs, Department of State, as Deputy of the unit that handled relations with the states of Central Asia in the first years of their independence. His first assignment in the Foreign Service was as Vice Consul in Guatemala, 1984-1986.

 Mr. Hyland holds a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College (Class of 2000); Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University; and Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of California, Berkeley.  He has been a Visiting Foreign Scholar at the University of Tokyo, and also studied at the Inter-University Center for Advanced Japanese Language Studies, administered by Stanford University. His foreign languages include Japanese, Ukrainian, Azerbaijani, and Spanish. He received the Sinclaire Award from the American Foreign Service Association for his study of the Azerbaijani language.

 Mr. Hyland and his wife, Leslie, have two children, a son who is an Army First Lieutenant, and a daughter who attends university in Australia.
