Emergency Appointments
 

To request an emergency appointment, the applicant must first pay the MRV fee and schedule a regular appointment. Only after scheduling a regular appointment can an applicant request an earlier appointment due to an urgent situation such as:

  • A medical emergency, i.e., loss of life or limb.
  • Death of an immediate family member (parent, sibling, child).
  • A student or exchange visitor starting or returning to a program where the start date precedes the next available appointment date.
  • A lost or stolen passport containing a valid U.S. visa.



Step 1: Schedule a Regular Appointment

  • The applicant must be in Tanzania, have paid the MRV fee, and have already scheduled an online appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania according to the instructions on the website.

 

Step 2: Request an Emergency Appointment by Email

  1. Send an email to drsniv@state.gov, include your full name (as it appears in your passport), the type of visa you are applying for, your scheduled appointment time, and the appointment time you would like.
  • Depending on your emergency, you will need to scan and email the following documents:
    • Medical Emergency: Travel to obtain emergency medical treatment in the United States, or to travel in support of another person receiving treatment to prevent loss of life or limb. (Note: Applicants must provide the name, relationship, place, and description of the matter, and the attending physician’s contact information, an acceptance letter from the U.S. hospital for the patient, and detail cost and payment method. In addition, include a letter from the doctor with the diagnosis, prognosis and recommended treatment.)
    • Death of an Immediate Family Member: Travel due to the death of an immediate family member (mother, father, brother, sister, or child) in the United States. (Note: Applicants must provide the name, relationship, place, and description of the matter, with the attending physician and U.S. funeral home contact information.)
    • Students/Exchange Students: Return to the United States for school or work as a research scholar or exchange visitor. (Note: Applicants must scan and email the I-20 or DS-2019 form showing a start date earlier than the next available appointment date.)
    • A lost or stolen passport that contained a valid U.S. visa. Scan/email a copy of the police report documenting the theft or loss.



Step 3: Consular Response Within Two Business Days

  • We grant emergency appointments at our discretion and will evaluate each request on a case-by-case basis.
  • If we can accommodate the request, we will send an email with the date and time of the emergency appointment.
  • If we cannot grant one, we will advise that via email. The original appointment date/time remains valid.
  • Receiving an expedited appointment does not guarantee visa issuance. The applicant must still qualify for the visa. Bring the relevant documents (described above) to the interview with the passport, the DS-160 confirmation sheet, and photo.
