Non-Immigrant Visas

Nonimmigrant visas are required for travelers who wish to visit the United States temporarily for tourism, business, studies or cultural exchanges. In most cases, visa applicants must appear in person before a U.S. Consular Officer in Port-au-Prince for a visa interview.  Interviews are by appointment only. The Embassy does not accept applicants without appointment.

A visa is not a guarantee of entry into the United States.  Under American law, a visa is simply permission to apply for entry into the United States.  The person to whom a visa has been issued is subject to inspection at the port of entry by officials of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS determines the length of stay authorized to the alien upon entry. Additionally, the validity of a visa is not related to the length or number of extensions of stay that may be granted subsequently by DHS. A nonimmigrant visa for a particular category is valid for entry only for the purpose for which it was originally issued. For example, a student visa cannot be used for entry as a visitor, nor can the holder of a visitor visa enter to study.

To apply for a non-immigrant visa to visit the U.S., follow these steps:

  1. Find out "Which visa do I need?"
  2. Pay the fees at any Sogebank.
  3. Have your photo taken.
  4. Download and complete the DS-160 application form.
  5. Submit the application and print your confirmation receipt.
  6. Make an appointment online.

Due to biometrics processing procedures, the Consular Section is unable to issue visas the day of the interview.  All applicants are encouraged to apply for visas well in advance. Appointments cannot be expedited simply because you purchased your tickets. You should not buy your plane tickets unless you have a valid visa in your possession.

When your visa is approved, you will need to make arrangements with the courier service located within the U.S. consulate to have your passport delivered to you.  This service costs USD $10.00 per passport.
