Cultural Programs
The Office of Public Affairs of the American Embassy organizes a number of cultural programs throughout the year with support from the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and American and Tanzanian institutions.
Many of the events are free and open to the public, and we encourage people to email or call us to register to attend the events. Some events are by invitation only, but can sometimes be viewed on tape after the event. Feel free to address any questions about events to paodar@state.gov.
Annual Programs
January
Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration – this celebration to honor the Father of the Civil Rights Movement also pays tribute to a Tanzanian who emulates the life and work of Dr. King in a Martin Luther King Drum Major for Justice Award.
February
African American History Month – this is a celebration of the achievements of African Americans in the U.S. There are usually school events and a film festival.
March
Women’s History Month – this is a celebration of the achievements of women in the U.S. There are usually presentations by American Women and a film festival.
April
Jazz Appreciation Month – Programs that celebrate this American art form are usually held during this month.
Earth Day, April 22 – to raise awareness among students and the general public around U.S. State Department themes, Americans and Tanzanians discuss efforts to take care of the environment and conduct programs to initiate or continue projects that support such efforts.
July
U.S. Independence Day is on July 4.
Saba Saba – participation in Trade Fair
September
Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15 celebrates the life and work of Hispanic Americans in the U.S.
November
The Educational Advising Center of the Embassy holds its annual College Fair – see the educational advising page for more details.
December
World AIDS Day December 1 – highlighting U.S. government efforts to fight HIV/AIDS.
Periodic Programs
Speaker Program – U.S. Speakers come to Tanzania or conduct Digital Video Conference presentations on various topics of interest to both Americans and Tanzanians.
Student Enrichment Program – the Educational Advising Center hosts monthly seminars to improve student’s skills necessary for university admission.
Cultural Envoy Program – Cultural Envoys visit Tanzania and conduct workshops, seminars and consultation with Tanzanians.
Book Discussion Program – the Information Resource Center hosts book discussions for Tanzanian readers on various topics.
Artist performance programs – U.S. musicians, artists, authors, actors and sports figures visiting Tanzania present lectures, workshops or performances for students and the general public.
