Fifth Generation of Morocco’s Access Program Launches

January 2009

In January, thirty-nine new Access programs began helping 756 talented 14- and 15-year olds from disadvantaged sectors improve their English with after-school classes.

Students are recruited according to Department of State criteria.  Classes are small, very interactive, and taught in an American style.  NGOs such as the Moroccan English Teachers Association and private schools such as Amideast competed for grants to carry out the two-year programs.

Morocco was the birthplace of Access and has the second largest program in the world (after India). There are 1706 Access students in forty-three locations from Tiznit to Oujda.  Twenty-two locations are new this year.  They include:  Khouribga, Erachidia, Zagora, Safi, El Hoceima, and Ksar El Kebir.
