TIP Conclave 2: Raising Awareness
U.S. Consul General joined hands with leading anti human trafficking NGOs and hundreds of youth volunteers in a series of events last week. The events included panel discussions, poster making, creative arts workshops, anti trafficking march, crafts mela and cultural programs staged at Mohorkunj. Youth volunteers spearheaded this mass awareness program which ended with the screening of excerpts from Nicholas Kristof’s ‘Half the Sky”.

American Library Celebrates Kolkata through Book Launch by American Photographer Steve Raymer
The American Library, in partnership with Oxford University Press, hosted the book launch for Redeeming Calcutta: A Portrait of India’s Imperial Capital by National Geographic photographer and professor Steve Raymer. Photographers, students of photography clubs and noted Kolkata personalities packed the house and joined in a lively discussion with Mr. Raymer who appeared via Skype to discuss his experience of working in Kolkata and how his book evolved.

Access Microscholarship students from Murshidabad spent an event-filled day at the American Center. The students had the opportunity to hone their English in a Spelling Bee, test their intellect with a “Knowledge USA” quiz, and participate in a workshop featuring English language-focused activities on the environment.

Engaging Youth Across our Consular District Through Music
So its Shillong again, for the second consecutive year. Yes friends, Dosser's Urge from Shillong is the winner of Autumn Music Festival 2012. The crowd at Tantra, The Park was spellbound with their stunning music and performance. Monopoly Syndrome from Darjeeling was chosen first runner up and they were great too. Kolkata's own Blitz the band were chosen as the second runner up by the judges-- American Center Deputy Director Rachel Sunden, city musicians Rahul Guha Roy and Neel Adhikari.

District Youth Relish A Taste Of America
The American Library Kolkata organized a day-long program for over fifty students from five Bangla-medium schools in North Bengal on August 31. The students participated in a Spelling Bee followed by a "KnowledgeUSA quiz", a fun way of testing their knowledge about US history and culture and an educational workshop on making toys using optical illusions.

Riding on the wave of enthusiasm and curiosity for space programs, American Library screened Apollo 13 on August 30. 170 space lovers and film enthusiasts, a majority from city schools and students of Indian Science News Association attended the screening.

The U.S. is better positioned to adapt than China, Europe or the Arab world” said noted academician and U.S foreign policy expert Prof. Walter Russell Mead while addressing think tanks, business leaders and academics at Kolkata’s Taj Bengal on August 16. Explaining his view about how and why the future still belongs to America, the Editor-at-large of American Interest magazine said, “what is unique about the United States is not our problems. Every major country in the world today faces extraordinary challenges—and the 21st century will throw more at us. Yet looking toward the tumultuous century ahead, no country is better positioned to take advantage of the opportunities or manage the dangers than the United States”.
