  • September 2011: East-West Center - United States – South Pacific Scholarship Program

    The East-West Center has released the applications for United States – South Pacific Scholarship Program. These scholarships are available only to citizens of South Pacific countries, and range from undergraduate to masters level degrees. The recipient of the scholarship will receive money for: tuition, room and board, airfare and several other costs incurred while studying in the United States. The program will include a summer internship in Washington, D.C. as well as a 4 to 5 week service project in the applicant’s home country.   • June 2011 - Assistant Secretary Campbell’s Travel to the Pacific Islands

    Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt M. Campbell, accompanied by U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Patrick M.   • Peace Corps seal
    Celebrations in Samoa of Peace Corps 50th Anniversary worldwide and 44years in Samoa Launched

    The patron of celebrations Her Highness Masiofo Filifilia, U.S. Embassy Apia Chargé d’Affaires and Peace Corps Director Dale Withington launched story, picture and photo competition was announced for stories of PC work in Samoa and Samoans experiences in the past four decades-- deadline on May 20. The winning pieces will be collated in a PC Samoa booklet to be launched at the festivities of the Fourth of July. This year’s Embassy Fourth of July will highlight PC contribution in the world and Samoa.

    STATEMENT BY SECRETARY CLINTON - On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Independent State of Samoa on the 48th anniversary of your nation’s independence on June 1. I also offer warm wishes to Samoans in the United States and around the world. As Pacific neighbors, the United States and Samoa enjoy a warm partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest. We look forward to another year marked by cooperation on combating climate change, spurring economic development, and promoting deeper cultural ties. We wish Samoa continued progress toward recovery from last year’s devastating tsunami, and pledge sustained support from the people and government of the United States.
