General Information

Important Announcement

The Consular Section will be closed on Friday, February 15, 2013, as the consular staff will participate in an off-site event. The Embassy will also be closed on Monday, February 18, 2013, in observance of President's Day. Emergency Services are available from the Embassy 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Emergencies include the death, arrest or a life threatening illness of a U.S. citizen. In an emergency involving an American citizen after public hours please call +(40 21) 200-3300.

All non-emergency services (renewal of U.S. passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, Notarials and other services) are provided by appointment only. How to Contact Us

You can contact us by email, telephone, or mail, but before doing so, please review the information on our website as the answer may readily be available. Please note that we will NOT respond to visa or ESTA related inquiries.   

  • E-mail: For specific questions regarding our services that have not been answered by the information on our website, send an email to AcsBucharest@state.gov.
  • Telephone inquiries: The American Citizen Services Unit answers inquiries by telephone at (+4) 021-270-6000 Monday to Friday, between the hours of 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm, except for American and Romanian public holidays.  The morning hours are reserved for visitors with appointments and only emergency phone calls (see instructions below) can be answered.
  • Emergencies: In case of an emergency, i.e. the arrest, life threatening illness or death of an American citizen, you can call the above number from 8:00 A.M. through 5:00 P.M. In case of such an emergency outside these business hours, i.e. evenings, weekends or holidays, please call the Duty Officer at (+4) 021-200-3300. No immigration, visa or ESTA information is available at this number.
  • Fax: +(40 21) 200-3578.

Public Transportation Information: Bus lines from Bucharest to the Embassy:

  1. Drumul Matasii lines: 301, 148, 149, 449;

For security reasons, the following may not be brought to the Consulate:

  • large bags, backpacks, suitcases, packages and luggage
  • laptop computers, mobile phones, electronic devices such as blackberries, iPods, or PDAs, cameras or video or audio equipment

There are no luggage storage facilities on Embassy grounds. A temporary luggage storage facilities exists at the North Train Station (Gara de Nord).

Secure Flight

  • Effective October 1, 2010, if your travel plans include airline flights to/from the United States, you will be required to provide the following information at the time you make your reservations and at least 72 hours before beginning travel:

Scam Notice

  • Internet Dating and Scam Notice

    Scams involving U.S. citizens have led to the loss of considerable amounts of money, ranging from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. For more information on commonly encountered international financial scams, please visit the Department of State’s website.

    Please beware of any emails requesting any personal information such as social security number, bank account numbers, login identification such as user id and passwords for online banking information. The U.S. Embassy does not request such information from customers, visa applicants or their sponsors. Official email communications from the U.S. Government come from domains ending in “.gov”.  The U.S. Government does not send emails from private email domains such as Gmail or Yahoo.

    To report suspicious emails or requests from people that claim affiliation with the US Embassy, please forward the suspicious email or provide the relevant information immediately to BCHFPM@state.gov.
