New DS-160 Online Visa Application
In an effort to streamline processing of nonimmigrant visa applications and to reduce paper consumption, the U.S. Department of State is rolling out a new online application form, the DS-160.
As of April 30, 2010 all applicants are required to use the DS-160 web-based nonimmigrant visa application. This new application replaces the three forms that previously comprised the Electronic Visa Application Form (EVAF).
After completing the DS-160, the applicant will electronically transmit the application and will be provided with a confirmation page that includes some biographical information and a bar code with a confirmation number. Applicants must bring this confirmation page with them to their interview.
In addition, applicants using the DS-160 will need to bring the following to their interview:
- Appointment date confirmation page;
- Passport, valid for at least six months;
- 2 recent passport-size photos, 2 by 2 inches (5 cm by 5 cm), color on a light background with head centered in the frame;
- Supporting documents showing evidence of strong ties to one's home country.
- $140 nonimmigrant visa application fee
If the biographic data in the online application does not reflect the biographic data in the applicant's passport or if it has not been completed fully and accurately, the applicant will be requested to return with a newly completed application.

As before, applicants should apply well in advance of their anticipated travel and should not make irrevocable plans until they have received their passports and visas.
Below are the requirements for accessing the application form:
• The Internet browser must support 128-bit encryption and must have javascript enabled.
• The minimum version of Internet Explorer (Windows) that this site supports is version 5.0 service pack 2 or higher.
• The minimum version of Netscape that this site supports is version 6.2 or higher.

Surveys indicate it takes 20-40 minutes to complete the form online, but it could take significantly longer for more complex cases.
Please refer to the photo quality standards guide for further detailed guidance on the quality, resolution and size of passport photos to bring to the interview.
On the "Thank You" page you will see an option to create a family or group application. When you select this option, certain information from your application, such as destination, will automatically be imported to and displayed on a new application. Please note that if you use this option you will need to create an individual application for each of your family members traveling with you or for each individual within the group.
Advance planning will ensure that the visa application process is smooth for you. Apply for your visa well in advance of your travel.
