Legislative and Public Affairs Internship Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in internship opportunities with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Legislative and Public Affairs (LPA)!

USAID is the lead agency for the U.S. Government providing economic development and humanitarian assistance to people around the world. By creating the conditions to help countries move from poverty to prosperity, we serve both the American public and millions of people living in developing countries, countries affected by natural disasters and countries in transition.

USAID’s LPA is responsible for all of the Agency's external affairs and provides overall coordination for all aspects of legislative and public affairs matters for the Agency. LPA directs the Agency's communications strategy and policies; is responsible for communicating positioning, messaging and branding; develops outreach and educational programs; leads the Agency's online marketing strategy and manages the external website; and produces events and promotional products to generate support for USAID's mission.

In short, LPA serves as the liaison between the Agency and American people, Congress, the media, and the Agency's other key constituencies.

Interns should specify their preference to work in one of four areas:

  1. Legislative Affairs: outreach to members of Congress and their respective staffs, assisting with analysis of federal legislation, attending Congressional hearings, research, writing and activities;
  2. Writing/Journalism: writing and editing for USAID publications, mainly FrontLines, USAID’s monthly newsletter;
  3. Special Events and Protocol: assisting in the production of ceremonies and events;
  4. Specialty Media: working with our press office, social media and public engagement teams on telling our story to the media and various USAID stakeholders; and
  5. Multimedia: helping produce unique audiovisual content for USAID's various communications platforms. Preference given to those with thorough knowledge of leading media production software and operating systems.

The internship is full-time with a minimum requirement of three(3) eight(8)-hour days per week. Please indicate availability (approximate dates and days/hours per week).

Qualifications: All candidates must be U.S. citizens (without dual nationality) currently enrolled in good standing in an accredited College or University.

In addition, candidates should possess a general knowledge about U.S. government agencies and USAID policies, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and computer proficiency.

Please note: Preference will be given to well-rounded applicants with both a variety of non-academic activities along with their academic career. Internships are unpaid and housing assistance is not provided. Interns will be required to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance at the ‘Secret’ level. In order to obtain a security clearance, selected interns must pass a background check.

Contact: If interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to lpainternships@usaid.gov during the dates indicated below. Only applications sent during the specified dates will be considered.

Legislative and Journalism interns may be asked to submit a writing sample. Only selected intern candidates will be contacted.

For Summer internship opportunities (May/June – August, 2013), apply between January 1 and February 1, 2013.

For Fall internship opportunities (August – December, 2013), apply between June 1 and July 1, 2013.
