1/28/2013 - LUKE AIR FORCE, Ariz. -- Midwestern University fourth year medical students spent the Tuesday morning learning about the benefits and rewards of joining the Air Force.
"These seniors are about to embark on their residencies," said Master Sgt. Michael Langdon, 944th Fighter Wing Medical Recruiter. "It is the perfect time to start the conversation with them about the possibility of joining the Air Force Reserve."
The students listened to a brief presented by Lt. Col. Marc Matthews who is a doctor with the Air National Guard's 161 Medical Group. Matthews shared experiences from his recent deployment to Afghanistan and highlighted the rewards and challenges of being a military doctor.
"The sometimes graphic briefing was a great way to show these students what we really do in military medicine," said Maj. David Hume, flight doctor, 944thFighter Wing, works as a Family Practice doctor and faculty member at Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. "Dr. Matthews didn't sugar coat what it's like to be in a forward operating medical unit."
After the Military Medicine brief, Master Sgt. Langdon made a short presentation on the benefits of joining the Air Force Reserve.
"We can help medical students pay for their schooling and give them a stipend during their residency without having to participate in Reserve duty until they have finished their residency," said Langdon. "Once they are certified doctors they become Traditional Reservists serving one weekend a month and two weeks a year for their designated commitment. It really is a great deal."
