McGrath Roads Reconstruction Project

The Western Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the Denali Commission, is proposing to reconstruct 1.6 miles of McGuire's Road and Chinana Road in McGrath, Alaska. The project extends from the intersection of Martella Drive on Chinana Avenue westward along Chinana Avenue and east on McGuire's Drive onto Tonzona Avenue terminating on Tonzona Avenue.

The roads proposed for repair serve the majority of transportation needs within McGrath. The existing roads lack adequate drainage and structure which results in poor road conditions. The roads also have a dusty gravel/silt surfacing that creates a safety and health hazard. The road conditions present a maintenance cost that is not sustainable and can be a safety hazard as well. The road width is variable and the road boundaries and intersections are not well defined. Overall, the road conditions do not meet the transportation needs of the community.

The project purpose is to:

  • Improve the road features, structure and surfacing to safely handle traffic
  • Reduce the need for maintenance and provide a road that is sustainable for the community
  • Reduce dust produced by traffic
  • Address road drainage deficiencies

The project work is planned to occur during the 2011 construction season. The work is anticipated to begin in the spring and end in the fall.
