The Defense Department’s National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2) developed a mobile application to help service members use the therapeutic benefits of biofeedback, a technique for gaining control of a person’s body processes to increase relaxation and relieve pain.

The newly released mobile app, “BioZen,” uses wireless sensors to show the user their physical level of relaxation. This is the first portable, low-cost method for clinicians and patients to use biofeedback in and out of the clinic.

“Mastering biofeedback successfully is difficult and frustrating for many people,” said Dr. David Cooper, T2 psychologist. “This app makes it easier for the user to learn how their body reacts to pain and anxiety and knowing that, learn how to control it.”

“BioZen” shows real-time data from multiple body sensors, including electroencephalogram, electromyography, galvanic skin response, electrocardiogram, respiratory rate and skin temperature. Each sensor sends a separate signal to the phone so users can see how their body is responding to their behavior.

The app can display many brainwaves, such as Alpha waves, which are high when a person is focused and attentive.

The mobile app is free for Android devices, but users need to purchase compatible medical sensors to use the app to its full capabilities. Read the news release for more information.

The National Center for Telehealth and Technology, located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., serves as the primary Defense Department office for cutting-edge approaches in applying technology to psychological health. T2 is a part of Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury. More information about “BioZen” and T2 is available at t2health.org.

This sounds interesting. I'm wondering how much the app user would spend to fully activate the system all sensors operating as expected?

I am trying to access and it doesn't come up when I search in apps on my iPhone. Is it only available for Android devices?

@Suzanne, Yes, the BioZen mobile app is only available for Android devices. There are several other T2 apps available for both Apple and Android devices; check them out at http://www.t2health.org/products/mobile-apps.
