2013-2014 Fulbright Doctoral Fellowship Program

The newly inaugurated Fulbright Doctoral Program will place up to 3 qualified Afghans in United States’ universities to pursue a five-year PhD in selected fields of study during the 2013-14 academic year.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. 

Eligible fields of study: Agriculture, Communications, Economics, Education, Engineering, Math, Science or Technology

  • Applicants must be Afghan nationals and currently reside in Afghanistan  
  • Master’s degree required (degree attested before September 1st)
  • Applicants should have a sufficient level of English to enable them to successfully complete full-time doctoral study in the U.S.  (TOEFL of 600 or higher, preferred)
  • Applicants must present at least three letters of recommendation from their professors and/or employers
  • Applicants should have limited or no prior experience in the United States
  • Professional writing sample required after selection as a Finalist (10-15 pages, in anticipated field of study)

Important: Be sure to select “Doctorate” in question 11.  Applications has been extended to midnight (Kabul time) on May 1, 2012. Fellowships will be awarded for academic programs beginning in the United States in August/September 2013. Late applications will not be accepted.

Selection

Participants will be recruited through a merit-based, open competition and chosen based upon their leadership potential, academic excellence, maturity, ability to adjust successfully to life in the U.S., strong interest in engaging Americans, and potential to promote mutual understanding between the United States and Afghanistan. Placement

Fulbright Doctoral Fellows will study at a university in the United States for up to five years. Applicants may indicate a preference for universities in which they would like to study in item 11 of the application. Preferences will be taken into consideration, but Fulbright has a placement process and will not fund direct applications. For more information, please see Selection and Placement document.

No Dependents

The Fulbright Doctoral Fellowship is provided for the recipient only; dependents cannot be supported. No dependents, no exceptions!  You will not be able to pay to have someone accompany you on the program because the J-1 visa allows entry into the United States for the Fellow ONLY.

All Fellows are expected to return to Afghanistan for at least two years at the conclusion of their program in compliance with the J-1 visa requirements and to promote mutual understanding.
