How did you become an NIH employee?
I came to NIH as a member of the Administrative Fellows Program, class of 2009. This program has since become part of the Pathways Program.
What inspired you to want to work at NIH?
Having studied biology/public health and knowing NIH’s public health mission, I have always been interested in joining the team at NIH.
Was it difficult transitioning from the military into NIH?
I have been out of the military for quite some time therefore the transition to NIH was not impacted based on my military experiences. I will say that the transition from military to civilian life was rather concerning because it was a time of uncertainty. Having been in the military and doing things a certain way for an extended period of time and all of a sudden having that world dissolved could definitely take some getting use too.
What is your role at NIH?
As a management analyst at CSR I serve as a resource to upper management on a number of subject matter areas. My areas of expertise are Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Privacy, Delegations of Authority, Records management and Crisis response. Additionally, I serve as lead of an internal CSR policy review group.
How do you think other veterans can benefit from joining NIH?
I think other veterans could benefit from joining NIH because it is a great place to work. I believe the culture at NIH is very colleague based, similar to my military experience. Additionally, as with working at any government agency, following military service there is a good opportunity for continuity of federal benefits.
