Director (NIAAA)

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

The NIH is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, NIAAA. The Director provides leadership to the Institute and conducts and supports basic, clinical, behavioral research, epidemiological and health services research, research training, and health information dissemination with respect to the treatment of alcohol use disorders. He/she will provide a national focus for the Federal effort to increase knowledge and promote effective strategies to deal with health problems and issues associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism. To carry out its mission, the NIAAA has a budget of $459 million with staff of over 400 full-time equivalents, contractors, fellows, and trainees.

This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an exceptional leader to serve as the chief visionary for NIAAA and lead all aspects of this highly complex organization. The Director actively engages others to create a shared vision of the purpose and direction of the NIAAA and works collaboratively within NIAAA, across the NIH, and with external entities including other government agencies and academic organizations to generate, gain commitment for, and accomplish organizational goals. The Director has a keen awareness of the workings of the public sector and successfully navigates within this environment to effectively promote and reach both NIAAA and NIH objectives. He/she keeps the Director of the NIH abreast of NIAAA’s developments, accomplishments, and needs as they relate to the overall mission of the NIH. He/she also identifies the need for new or amended NIH-wide policies, procedures, and practices. The Director optimizes NIAAA performance by developing strategic priorities, setting and communicating clearly defined expectations, and promoting accountability for results. The Director is also the champion and driver for the successful implementation of change initiatives. Personally, the Director serves as a role model for the Institute, demonstrating integrity and fairness and adhering in work and behavior to the highest ethical, scientific research, and business standards.

In addition to the leadership and managerial/administrative responsibilities described, the incumbent may carry out his/her own research program. Resources commensurate with the proposed program will be provided.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree (or other doctorate, e.g., Pharm.D., Sc.D., etc.) and have senior-level research and administrative experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to research in alcohol-related disorders. They should be known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, as distinguished individuals of outstanding scientific competence.

Salary/Benefits

The Director, NIAAA, will be appointed at a salary commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. Full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided.
