Welcome to the Air Force Women Officers Associated page. AFWOA was formed in 1975 by a group of retired Air Force women officers who wished to preserve the friendships that they had made while on active service. Membership has now grown to over 1000, including many active duty women. Active duty, retired and separated women officers of the regular Air Force and its reserve components are invited to join AFWOA.

AFWOA's purpose is to foster comradeship through reunions, maintain ties between active and retired women officers, preserve the history and promote recognition of the role of military women, and lend support to women engaged in education and training programs. We sponsor the permanent Most Valuable Swimmer Award (Woman) at the Air Force Academy.

Reunions are held biannually in the United States. Members of the Reunion Committee and AFWOA Board of Directors serve as volunteers to organize these events.

AFWOA is recognized by the IRS and State of Texas as a non-profit, tax-exempt veterans' organization. Members' contributions and dues are the sole source of income and are greatly appreciated. Normal expenses include postage and printing costs associated with publication of the newsletters, membership roster and reunion announcements as well as telephone service which includes an 800 number and E-mail.

Seeking Female Veterans for Research Study

Surveying Women Veterans As They Grow Older

Women have served valiantly in various capacities during America's wars and conflicts since the Revolutionary War.  The addition of a nursing auxiliary to the Army during the Spanish-American War marked the first formal establishment of women in the military, with women's roles growing ever since.  World War II (WWII) was the first era in which women served in relatively large numbers and under full military status as part of the Women's Army Corps (WAC), the Navy's WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the Marine Corps Women's Reserve, the Coast Guard Women's Reserve (known as SPARS, Semper Paratus--Always Ready) and the WASPS (Women Air Force Service Pilots).  As of 2006, there were an estimated 149,000 living women veterans of WWII.  Since WWII, women have continued to serve under full military status in the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War and increasingly in active combat duty since the 1990s.  Only recently, however, has research begun to examine the wartime experiences of woman Veterans.

The Stress, Health, and Aging Research Project (SHARP) at the VA Boston Healthcare System is seeking female Veterans age 55 and older for a study examining the thoughts and feelings of aging Veterans related to their wartime experiences.  Through this research, we are hoping to gain a better understanding of Veterans as they age and to be able to educate healthcare workers to provide the best possible care for our older Veterans.  Participation includes a 20-minute telephone interview and a mail survey (about 70-80 minutes total).  To date, over 150 Veterans have participated in the study.  Any female Veteran aged 55 or older who is interested in participating may call our Project Coordinator, Anica Pless Kaiser, at 1-800-865-3384 ext. 45309.

AFWOA.org Has a New Look

Written by Linda Allen, Webmaster Friday, 23 July 2010 09:03

AFWOA is now using a free content management system called Joomla (www.joomla.org) for our website.  Joomla produces a professional looking website that is easy to update.

A few people may experience problems when trying to access links on our website.  If you use Internet Explorer and get a message that says "The address is not valid",  you are running in Compatibility View.  In IE8 click on "Page" in the toolbar in the upper right, then click on Compatibility View Settings.  Remove tdw.org from the list of websites running in Compatibility View.  The links should work okay then.

Access to the Members Only area of the website is now through the login form in the right column of the Front Page (home page).  During our transition, you can access the existing Members Only area by clicking on the "LoginMember.html" link.  If you are an AFWOA member and do not have a user name and password, send a request to the webmaster.
