2/6/2013 - SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.  -- The 1st Space Operations Squadron is calling all athletes.

This year's Maj. Gen. Jimmey R. Morrell Awards Banquet organizers have planned a triathlon type event in preparation for the banquet and everyone associated with Schriever Air Force Base is invited to partake in the challenge.

"We've set up the competition as a team event," said lead Morrell banquet committee member Capt. Justin Fernandez. "Teams must consist of six athletes. Four team members will compete in bowling and golf, while all six must participate in the dodgeball competition."

The bowling competition is slated for Feb. 19 at the Peterson AFB Bowling Center, while the dodgeball event is set for some time in April at the Schriever Fitness Center and the golf tournament is slated for May 16 at Antler Creek Golf Course in Falcon.

The squadron boldly stepped in to organize this year's pre-banquet activities. In past years, teams competed in just the golf portion, but Fernandez said 1 SOPS members wanted to try something different.

"Lt. Col. Mike Manor, 1 SOPS commander, asked if we could try to host something fun, so we thought adding a second sporting event would give units more of an opportunity for bragging rights," Fernandez said. "But, when we approached Col. Tommy Roberts, 50th Operations Group commander, with the idea he asked why we couldn't add a third event. His idea was to style it after a triathlon competition."

The committee exited the meeting with a brand new event and a new name, the Triathateam competition.

Fernandez hasn't decided on a scoring format for the full event yet, but envisions some type of point system.

"I think it will be like the decathlon in the Olympics," he said. "Teams won't need to necessarily win any events, but they'll have to perform well in all of them."

Though the Morrell banquet is held each year to recognize the best performers in the 50 OG, Manor explained that the 1 SOPS committee believed it was important to include everyone connected to the 50th Space Wing and Schriever in the pre-banquet athletic competition.

"This event is all about Team Schriever and how we can use athletics to bring us closer together," Manor said. "Triathateam is a fun way to promote teamwork through friendly competition."

Fernandez explained that winners will be decided in each athletic event and that teams can compete in one or two events if they so choose, but they must compete in all three to be eligible for the overall victory.

Roberts will present the Triathateam winner with the "Aluminum Trophy" at the Morrell
banquet.

Teams interested in signing up for the competition should contact Fernandez at 567-6972 or Master Sgt. Michieal Turney at 567-7519.
