The individual selected for this position will;

*Perform engineering systems maintenance and repair work.

*Have overall responsibility for engineering systems that may be assigned to him/her.

*Keep required records, logs, and reports. Stands engine room watches at sea or in port as required. As engineer-in-charge directs the activities of assigned engineering watch personnel.

*Stand security watch and/or quarterdeck watch.

*Assist in ship fueling operations.

*Perform other mission-related duties as assigned including duties related to safety of the vessel and personnel.

There is no occupational or positive education requirement for this position.

You may substitute Education for Experience:   

Successful completion of full-time study in related subjects at a vocational school above the high school level may be substituted on the basis of one month from each month of experience for a maximum of one year.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  Applicants must have one year of experience as an Oiler and/or Engine Utilityman for a total of 2 years of experience. Experience must have provided the applicant with a good understanding of auxiliary equipment operation and repair. Experience does not necessarily have to have been gained aboard ship but should show competence in those types of equipment with which he/she will normally work aboard ship.

Applicant must possess a current valid USCG Merchant Mariners Credential or Document endorsed with the Unlicensed Junior Engineer or Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) - any Unlicensed Rating in the engine department.

IN ADDITION TO BASIC Requirements: 

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience for this position is defined as: experience performing engineering systems maintenance and repair work.  Standing engine room watches at sea or in port as required.
