Having a career as a Wage Mariner employee in NOAA is to be an integral part of understanding the condition of the ocean and atmosphere.  NOAA Wage Marine personnel add a seaman’s know-how to NOAA’s scientific research by directly participating in the operation and handling of scientific gear in the tumultuous ocean environment.  NOAA’s fleet of 19 research ships operate world-wide in direct support of NOAA’s diverse environmental information programs, environmental stewardship services and applied scientific research.

 

As a condition of employment your position will be a Mixed Tour.  Mixed Tour is a combination of full time, part time, and intermittent work schedules which allow the best utilization of resources based on the work requirements of the organization.  There is no guarantee that you will be assigned to any particular vessel or geographic location, however, your duty location will be determined by your home of record.  Duty locations are Norfolk, VA; Charleston, SC; Woods Hole, MA; Pascagoula, MS; Newport, OR; Kodiak, AK; Ketchikan, AK; San Diego, CA; Davisville, RI.

 

Once selected, you may be sent to any vessel nationwide.  Salary will be determined by duty location and vessel classification.

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Serve on a ship, launch, small boat, or field party conducting hydrographic survey operations.
  • Operate and monitor instruments and equipment, conducts data acquisition, data quality control, data annotations, data review, data quality assurance, and data processing in support of hydrographic surveying operations.
  • Maintain oceanographic and/or survey equipment and instruments.  
  • Operate computer software programs for data acquisition and data processing problems, recognizes and reports computer or systems problems to supervisor.
  • Assist in preparation of equipment and supplies for tide or horizontal control field work and sound velocity data acquisition.
  • Assist in the compilation and management of survey data, preparation of reports, final data processing, and preparation of survey data for transmittal.
  • May serve as hydrographic Officer-In-Charge in field work as assigned. 
  • Work closely and in cooperation with Junior Officers to ensure that hydrographic duties of the survey department are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Maintain department work and storage areas, including cleaning, organizing, sweeping, swabbing, and other assigned duties.
  • Responsible for safety of personnel, vessel and equipment, pollution controls, and personnel oversight. Stands watches including security watch, or quartermaster watch as required.
  • Handle mooring lines and assists with mooring details and small boat operations as required.
  • Perform other mission related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessel and personnel.

Two years experience at the Hydrographic Junior Survey Technician level or equivalent work engaged in the hydrographic field or 1 year of experience as a Hydrographic Junior Survey Technician and 1 year of experiance equivalent to work engaged in the hydrographic field. Experiance may include work in a survey related field, including; land surveying, hydrology, oceangraphic reserach, or similar related field.

 

 


This position has an individual occupational requirement. Candidates must meet the following Basic Requirements. 

Successful completion of a high school curriculum or higher, that

included four half-year courses in any combination of the following subjects is required for any position within the Survey Department: *mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc.), * surveying, *chemistry, *physics, *computer science or *earth. sciences.

You are not required to submit official transcrips at this time; unofficial copies are sufficient

In addition to the basic education requirements you must have two years at the Hydrographic Junior Survey Technician level or equivalent work engaged in the Hydrographic field.

Substitution of Education for Experience; Completion of two years of college, or an Associate's Degree, in science, engineering or computer related field that includes at least 10 credit hours in computer science or related classes such as Computer Cartography, GIS, or Auto-Cad may be substituted for two years of experience.

Hydrographic Survey: Serving on a ship, launch or field party engaged in oceanographic or survey operations performing such activities as : operating and monitoring (fathometers, multibeam, singlebeam or side-scan-sonar) instruments, including annotating records(fathometer, sound velocity or multibeam) and recording data using the above mentioned equipment, assisting in the staging and set-up during preparations for, and at the completion, of oceanographic and survey operations (such as at tide gauges, horizontal control or sound velocity); assisting in the preparation, installation, deployment and recovery of oceanographic and/or survey equipment and instruments (such as at tide gauges, horizontal control or sound velocity); and processing oceanographic and/or survey data (from processing singlebeam, cleaning and filtering multibeam data, writing a Descriptive Report and creating field sheets using Geographic Information Systems. 

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. 

Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

experience associated with conducting data acquistion, data review, and data processing for hydrographic surveys.
