Directed Energy Internships in Laser Science and Technology

Directed Energy Internships in Laser Technologies

The Army Research Laboratory Electro-optics and Photonics Division is involved in creating enabling technology for high energy lasers. Research topics include solid-state lasers at cryogenic temperatures, ceramic laser gain media, eye-safer laser concepts, upconversion, spectroscopy of novel laser materials, fiber lasers, stimulated Brillouin scattering, and coherent beam combining. Three to four students will be hired as summer interns in 2013. We are seeking undergraduate and graduate student candidates in physics, electrical engineering, materials sciences, and optics, who are U.S. citizens. First-time participants must have at least one full year of school to complete following the summer of 2013. For more information, or to submit a résumé and cover letter, send email to DEscholars@arl.army.mil. To receive full consideration, applications should be received by February 28, 2013. Program sponsored by the Directed Energy Professional Society www.deps.org.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

NDSEG is a graduate fellowship program for students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude towards training in science and engineering. Fellowships are awarded to applicants pursuing doctoral degrees in disciplines closely related to an area of DoD interest. ARL is involved in the final selection of the Army's 63 NDSEG Fellows each year. For more information about NDSEG, visit http://ndseg.asee.org.

College Qualified Leaders (SEAP-CQL)

College Qualified leaders (SEAP-CQL)

CQL provides a paid internship opportunity for college students in one of several Army research laboratories. These internships typically last for six months or more. Students do not have to have previous experience in SEAP to apply for CQL.

2013 SEAP-CQL Program: Potential research topics are listed here.

To apply, visit http://www.usaeop.com. If you have a research topic preference, please include details in Part 4 of the online application, in the "Why do you want to work in a lab this summer?" field.

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Program

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Program

SMART is a Department of Defense (DoD) scholarship for service program to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working in DoD laboratories. For more information about SMART, visit http://smart.asee.org.

Science Outreach for Army Research (SOAR)

Science Outreach for Army Research (SOAR)

Launched in the summer of 2009 at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland, is an organic, multi-disciplinary group of student interns, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists pursuing innovative scientific discovery that may inspire revolutionary technologies for current and future Army applications. Research projects are developed over typical periods of 12-24 months. Professors are invited to join the SOAR program as Visiting Scientists or mentors to work closely with team members and ARL research staff.

SOAR program members work with mentors throughout ARL's Sensors & Electron Devices Directorate, Computational & Information Sciences Directorate, and our extramural research partners to investigate novel scientific problems relevant to the ARL mission. Students and scientists are introduced to ARL's broad research spectrum, and given the freedom to formulate new research directions and investigate solutions. The SOAR program's current research direction is the investigation of technologies applicable to small autonomous systems, to include concepts for sensing, electronics, communications, power, and mechanical platforms based on novel physical or bio-inspired systems. Our focus includes (1) simulation, design, fabrication, and testing of research concepts, utilizing ARL's state-of-the-art Class 10/100 cleanroom, micro/nano device processing facilities, and extensive test and characterization laboratory facilities, and (2) development of novel concepts in applied mathematics, imaging science, sensor networking & fusion, and communications, utilizing ARL's extensive high performance computing facilities.

We are looking for driven, imaginative scientists and engineers. Degrees applicable to this research program include but are not limited to Electrical Engineering, Bio-Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Materials Science & Engineering, Physical Chemistry, and Computer Science. A competitive salary/stipend is offered. U.S. Citizenship is generally required, although non-U.S. citizens may be considered in the research areas of signal & image processing, multilingual computing, and intelligent optics.

To apply for the SOAR program, please send your resume, transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable), citizenship, and statement of research interest to: ARL-SOAR-Resumes@arl.army.mil.

Science and Technology Academic Recognition System (STARS)

ARL has continued the Science and Technology Academic Recognition System (STARS) that is a training and development program designed to reach talented students at HBCU/MIs who are enrolled in a science, engineering, or mathematics curriculum. The program offers up to $20,000 for tuition and expenses during the senior undergraduate year and up to $30,000 for each of two years of graduate school. ARL has committed a total of over $1 million to STARS recipients.

Note: All programs are subject to the availability of funds.
