2/1/2013 - KIRTLAND AFB, N.M.  -- On Jan. 26, members of Cub Scout Pack 85 of Kirtland AFB completed their annual Pinewood Derby competition.

The top three finishers, in order, were Hunter Hanson, Aaron Perez and Nathan Perez.

The Pinewood Derby began in Manhattan Beach, Calif., in the early 1950s, and because of its popularity, soon spread to other packs and became part of the national curriculum. Scout officials say the idea behind the event is the same idea behind all scouting events - to help the scout improve upon himself, by understanding sportsmanship/good citizenship, personal achievement, and family understanding.

To compete in the derby, scouts are given a block of pinewood, four wheels and four nails. With the help of an adult and a construction rulebook, scouts work to build a derby car with their materials. Scouts who make fast cars that place highly in their packs' derby could qualify to compete at a higher level against other scouts from different packs. Having a fast car though, isn't the only thing that matters. Packs often reward cars with the best paint job, design and creativity.

The Pinewood Derby is one of many events scouts complete annually. Scout activity curriculum is matched up with the regular school year, with most activities occurring between fall and early summer. Throughout a typical scouting year, boys will attend camping trips, go on hikes, learn wilderness survival skills, and serve their communities. Young boys entering the Boy Scouts of America start out as Cub Scouts and in time complete goals to advance them to the level of Boy Scout.

Boy Scouts of America officials say that he organization strives to instill qualities in their Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts that will help shape them into experienced young men who are assets to their communities.
