1/25/2013 - KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- The Kirtland Air Force Base Tax Center will be open again this year to provide free tax-filing services to eligible customers.

It is completely volunteer-run, again in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service's VITA program.

The Tax Center will open Feb. 5 and the hours of operation will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, by appointment only. The Tax Center is in the Consolidated Support Building, between the Military Personnel Section and the Defense Biometric Identification System office.

For the most part, Tax Center volunteers will be filing electronic tax returns, which means faster refunds for those who get refunds.
Tax Center volunteers will be available until approximately April 12 to prepare tax returns for E-6s and below, O-3s and below, and retirees with gross income of $60,000 and below.

Because of limited staffing, the Tax Center is unable to assist others.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable credit for people who earn less than $50,270 ("earned income" = wages from working). The credit could be as much as $5,891 depending on your filing status and the number of qualifying children. A person may qualify for the EITC even without a qualifying child if they earn less than $13,980 ($19,190 if married filing jointly). It would be advantageous to file your income tax return to see if you qualify for the EITC and possibly receive a refund.

For more info, visit the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=150513,00.html.
What to bring to your appointment:
 Proof of identification
 Social Security cards for every dependent/ITIN for foreign status
 Birth dates for you and every dependent
 A copy of last two years' federal and state returns
 Income statements: W-2, W-2G, 1099s
 Direct Deposit information (bring checkbook)
 Total paid for daycare provider and provider's tax identifying number

During the first two weeks in February, services will be limited to E-4s and below with simple returns (no itemized deductions).
This is because of legislation passed in December 2010 that prevents the IRS from processing returns for those who itemize deductions until late February.

Accordingly, filers who itemize will have to wait until mid-February or later to file their returns (exact date to be determined). At that time, the Tax Center also will be open to all other eligible customers.

Starting Jan. 28, clients can call 846-2934 for an appointment.

Starting Feb. 5, make appointments by calling 846-1700.

For more information, call Capt. Glines-Barney at 846-2934.
