TVA in Kentucky

Fiscal Year 2012 (October 2011 – September 2012)

In fiscal year 2012, TVA sold more than 7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to 10 municipal and five cooperatively owned utilities that distribute TVA power in Kentucky.
The distributors provided 2.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to more than 203,000 households in 28 counties in western and central Kentucky in 2012.
Kentucky distributors served more than 47,000 commercial and industrial customers in fiscal year 2012 with sales of more than 3.8 billion kilowatt-hours. In addition, distributors in Kentucky sold more than 93 million kilowatt-hours in outdoor lighting.
Kentucky is home to 15 directly served customers of TVA that purchased over 15.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
TVA power revenues in Kentucky in 2012 totaled more than $1.1 billion, or about 11 percent of all TVA operating revenues.

Distributors of TVA power serve all or a portion of the following counties in south central and western Kentucky: Adair, Allen, Barren, Butler, Caldwell, Calloway, Carlisle, Christian, Clinton, Cumberland, Edmonson, Fulton, Graves, Grayson, Hickman, Livingston, Logan, Lyon, Marshall, Metcalfe, Monroe, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Simpson, Todd, Trigg, Warren and Whitley.
The TVA service area in Kentucky covers 7,789 square miles, about 9 percent of TVA's territory. This includes an electricity service area of 7,576 square miles and a watershed management area of 1,042 square miles.

In Kentucky, TVA operates one hydroelectric dam (Kentucky Dam), eight combustion turbines (in Marshall County), and two coal-fired power plants (Paradise and Shawnee), providing a combined generating capacity of more than 4,520 megawatts.
TVA operates a 41-kilowatt site at Lovers Lane soccer complex in Bowling Green.
TVA owns or maintains 55 substations and switchyards and 1,634 miles of transmission line in Kentucky.

Kentucky Reservoir has a surface area of 160,300 acres and about 2,000 miles of shoreline.
TVA manages recreational, natural and cultural resources on more than 60,000 acres of public land around Kentucky Reservoir and partners with local and regional stakeholders to improve water quality, shoreline conditions and biodiversity.
Kentucky residents enjoy camping, fishing, boating, swimming and other recreational opportunities provided by Kentucky Reservoir, as well as economic benefits resulting from recreation and tourism.

TVA maintains the structural, seismic and hydraulic integrity of Kentucky Dam, which at 8,422 feet is the longest dam on the Tennessee River.
TVA operates Kentucky Dam and Reservoir as part of an integrated multi-purpose reservoir system to provide numerous stakeholders a variety of benefits which can include: navigation, flood risk reduction, low-cost hydropower, water supply, water quality, and recreational opportunities.
TVA owns Kentucky Lock, serving 35 ports and terminals. Approximately 31 million tons of cargo move through the facilities annually.
Kentucky Dam and Reservoir are operated to reduce crests on the lower Ohio and Mississippi rivers.
Eight industries, two mining companies, and one town (Grand Rivers) in Kentucky draw water from Kentucky Reservoir. Water also is drawn for irrigation.

Kentucky households had about 1.6 million kilowatt-hours in energy efficiency savings resulting from almost 870 In-Home Energy Evaluations by TVA certified evaluators and nearly 600 do-it-yourself home energy evaluations taken online or by paper survey.

TVA paid $46.7 million in lieu of taxes to Kentucky in 2012, based on power sales and power property values in the state.

TVA works with local power companies, directly served customers, and regional, state and community organizations to create economic development opportunities in the TVA region. Economic development focuses on attracting and retaining jobs, capital investment, and helping communities prepare for growth. During fiscal year 2012, 4,800 jobs were created or retained in Kentucky and more than $957 million was invested.

In fiscal year 2012, TVA purchased $107 million of enrichment services, over $452 million in fossil fuels and over $24 million in nonfuel materials and services from Kentucky vendors.
