TVA in Georgia

Fiscal Year 2012 (October 2011 – September 2012)

Energy Sales

  • In fiscal year 2012, TVA sold more than 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to two municipal and three cooperatively owned utilities that distribute TVA power in northern Georgia.
  • TVA power revenues from distributor purchases in Georgia totaled more than $234 million in 2012, or about 2 percent of all TVA operating revenues.
  • The distributors sold over 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to 130,222 households in 12 Georgia counties.
  • In 2012, distributors of TVA power served 24,139 commercial and industrial customers with sales of approximately 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours. In addition, distributors in Georgia sold more than 31 million kilowatt-hours to outdoor lighting customers.

Service Area

  • The Georgia counties served by TVA power are: Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Murray, Towns, Union, Walker and Whitfield.
  • The TVA service area in Georgia covers about 2,657 square miles, about 3 percent of TVA's territory.  This includes an electricity service area of 2,372 square miles and a watershed management area of 1,499 square miles.

Power Generation and Transmission

  • In Georgia, TVA owns and operates two hydroelectric dams with a combined generation capacity of 30 megawatts. The dams are Blue Ridge in Fannin County and Nottely in Union County.
  • TVA owns or maintains 21 substations and switchyards and 456 miles of transmission line in Georgia.

Land and Water Stewardship

  • Blue Ridge and Nottely reservoirs, as well as a portion of Chatuge Reservoir, are located among the scenic mountains of Georgia and have a combined surface area of more than 11,000 acres and about 250 miles of shoreline.
  • Georgia residents enjoy camping, fishing, boating, swimming and other recreational opportunities provided by these reservoirs, as well as economic benefits resulting from recreation and tourism.  Both Blue Ridge and Nottely have a day-use recreation area.  TVA also maintains four stream access sites.
  • TVA manages recreational, natural and cultural resources on more than 1,700 acres of public land around these reservoirs and partners with local and regional stakeholders to improve water quality, shoreline conditions and biodiversity in these reservoirs and their tributaries.

River Management

  • TVA maintains the structural, seismic and hydraulic integrity of two multipurpose dams in Georgia:  Blue Ridge and Nottely.
  • TVA operates the dams and reservoirs in Georgia as part of an integrated multi-purpose reservoir system to provide numerous stakeholders a variety of benefits which can include:  navigation, flood risk reductions, low-cost hydropower, water supply, water quality, and recreational opportunities.
  • Eight municipalities and two industries in Georgia draw water from the Tennessee River system. Water also is drawn for irrigation.

Other TVA Operations

  • Georgia households had over 900,000 kilowatt-hours of electric energy efficient savings resulting from 553 In-Home Energy Evaluations by TVA-certified evaluators and nearly 209 do-it-yourself home energy evaluations taken online or by paper survey.

Personnel

  • Georgia is home to 367 employees and 894 TVA retirees and their families.

Tax Equivalent Payments

  • TVA paid $9.4 million in lieu of taxes in Georgia in 2012, based on power sales and power property values in the state.

Economic Development

  • TVA works local power companies, directly served customers, and regional, state and community organizations to create economic development opportunities in the TVA region. Economic development focuses on attracting and retaining jobs, capital investment, and helping communities prepare for growth.  During fiscal year 2012, approximately 275 jobs were created or retained in Georgia and $8.6 million was invested.

TVA Suppliers

  • In fiscal year 2012, TVA purchased over $157 million in nonfuel materials and services from Alabama vendors.
