U.S. Envoy Meets with National Democratic Institute Officials

Mar 08, 2012

PORT MORESY, March 02, 2012 – U.S. Ambassador Teddy B. Taylor met with Thomas Barry and Telibert Laoc, the Asia Regional Director and Resident Director, respectively, of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) at the U.S. Embassy. The NDI officials arrived in Port Moresby to start the implementation of a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to help strengthen political parties in Papua New Guinea ahead of the Parliamentary Elections scheduled in June 2012.

"The U.S. is pleased to provide support to strengthening democracy in PNG in connection with the forthcoming 2012 National General Elections. The USAID Pacific Islands Office has worked with the U.S. Embassy, the Government of PNG, and other donors to develop a program to support political party strengthening activities including candidate debates. USAID assistance will focus on addressing gaps in electoral assistance that PNG currently receives from the others in the donor community, "said Ambassador Taylor.
