The American Citizen Services Unit performs notarial services (those services generally provided by Notaries Public in the United States) during window hours, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday.  Click here to schedule an online appointment. Notarial services can be performed for any individual, regardless of nationality, as long as the document being notarized is intended for use in the United States.  The services provided include:

• Affidavits: written declarations made under oath of affirmation; a sworn statement. Examples of affidavits include affidavit of support, affidavit concerning a lost passport, and affidavit of paternity.
• Acknowledgment: an acknowledgement of the signatures on documents that will be used in the United States attesting to the identity of the person executing the document. Generally used with deeds, powers of attorney, bills of sale, corporate acknowledgements, etc.
• Certification of True Copies: consular officers are unable to certify true copies of U.S. issued documents including marriage certificates, divorce decrees, death certificates, U.S. Academic Credentials, etc. You must obtain certified copies of these documents from the official custodian of the public records.  To request a certified copy of a Consular Report of Birth or Death, please click here. • Authentications: consular officers can authenticate Bangladeshi documents for use in the United States. However, one must first obtain the appropriate authentication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The authentication office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is located at:

Documents that are notarized will be ready the same day. However, please be advised that a consular officer may refuse to provide a notarial service when:

• That type of service is not authorized under U.S. law
• The document will be used in transactions that may be prohibited by U.S. law
• The document may be used for a purpose that is unlawful, improper, or inimical to the best interests of the United States
• The officer believes that the individual executing the document lacks the ability to understand the document they are requesting be notarized, and that document represents an action clearly antithetical to the interest of the individual

Consular officers at U.S. Embassies are not authorized to authenticate diplomas or other documents from schools in the United States or to provide notarial services related to such credentials. Consular officers are prohibited under U.S. law from providing legal advice or counsel and are not able to act as witnesses. Questions concerning the document being notarized, or clarifications of the language therein, should be addressed to a local or U.S. attorney, or other individual authorized to provide legal advice. The American Citizen Services Unit strongly encourages individuals seeking to notarize a document at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka to consult a lawyer prior to seeking notarial service if there are questions or concerns about the document itself.

The fee for notarial services is $50 for each seal.  The fee can only be paid in cash, either in U.S. dollars or the equivalent in Bangladeshi Taka. Under no circumstances may we accept credit cards, personal checks, or other financial instruments.
