Death of American Abroad

When an American citizen dies in Malaysia, the Consular Section of the American Embassy should be notified immediately.  Someone is available 24/7 at 03-2168-5000 (from within Malaysia) or 60-3-2168-5000 (from outside Malaysia).  Next of kin of American citizens who die abroad can also contact the Bureau of Consular Affairs Office of Overseas Citizens Services at the State Department in Washington, DC for assistance.  Their telephone number is (202) 501-4444 (or 1-888-407-4747 toll free within the U.S.)

A consular officer can notify the next of kin if necessary and will help the family work with a local mortuary to return the remains to the United States or to provide for local burial or cremation.  Mortuary and related expenses are the responsibility of the family of the deceased.

Policies and procedures relating to death in Malaysia, including those of American citizens, are governed by Malaysian law.  Quite frequently an autopsy is required, which can delay issuance of a death certificate and release of the remains.  The Embassy cannot influence or speed up these official procedures.

The Consular Section will prepare a Consular Report of Death Abroad once a Malaysian death certificate is issued.  The Consular Report of Death is acceptable in any U.S. jurisdiction for the settlement of legal, financial, and estate matters.
