“We Could Have Used Rosa Parks’ Leadership This Week” Republicans move to reduce minority voter registration the week of Rosa Parks death

(Washington, DC)  --  Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz made the following statement today in remembrance of Rosa Parks:

"Today our nation mourns the loss of a true American heroine.  Nearly a half century ago, Rosa Louise Parks made a monumental decision which helped to ignite one of the most powerful movements for social and civil justice in America.  Ms. Parks showed strength and resolve by staying committed to her values and principles when she refused to give up that seat on a Montgomery bus.  She stood in the face of power and spoke the truth; a truth that has served as a beacon of hope for people all over the world."

"In the next few weeks, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 will come before the House Judiciary Committee for reauthorization.  As a member of the committee, I will stand up to renew our commitment to voting rights for all Americans and ensure that our modern electoral system is fair and accessible.  The life and legacy of Rosa Louise Parks reminds us all that we not only have an opportunity to create social change, but a responsibility to be agents of change."
