Social Security and Other Federal Benefits

Welcome to the Mexico Mission Federal Benefits Unit (FBU)

FBU handles all federal benefits outside the United States, which are administered by the following U.S. government agencies: 

U.S. Social Security Administration:  Applications and claims for Enumeration, Retirement, Survivors, Disability insurance, Widows and dependent benefits, Post-entitlement issues, Benefit fraud investigations.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:  Benefit claims and payments for veterans and their dependents.  Burial flags for veterans. 

U.S. Railroad Retirement Board: Retirement claims and payments for U.S. railroad workers and their families

U.S. Office of Personnel Management: Civil service retirement claims and payments for U.S. federal employees and other qualified dependents

U.S. Department of Labor:  Black lung benefit claims and payments for miners who worked in the U.S.

U.S. Department of the Treasury: Financial Management Services, International Treasury Services.  Any benefit related issue involving treasury checks, including remittances and lost or stolen checks.

Mexico Mission has three Federal Benefit Units:  AmEmbassy Mexico City, ConGen Guadalajara, and ConGen Ciudad Juarez. 

The AmEmbassy Mexico City FBU covers the states of:   Michoacan, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Tlaxcala, Estado de Mexico, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.

The ConGen Guadalajara FBU covers the states of: Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Aguas Calientes, and Zacatecas.

The ConGen Ciudad Juarez FBU covers the states of Baja California Norte, Sonora, Durango, Chihuahua, Cohahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas. 

FBU offices are open to the public Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1200 and we also have a toll-free Mexico number (01-800-772-Mexico) available from 0800 to 1300 Monday through Friday.

We observe the Mission holiday schedule and we’re closed the last working day of the month for admin day.   

We do extensive outreach throughout Mexico and we work closely with state and local Mexican agencies.  We also work closely with American Citizen Services (ACS) and participate in town hall meetings and events serving American Citizens in Mexico.   We also collaborate with FPU and some law enforcement agencies at post in the detection and investigation of benefit fraud.
