PMI: Presidents Malaria Initiative - Saving lives in Africa.

PMI in Mozambique

The President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) officially launched in Mozambique on December 20, 2006, in a village located in Gaza Province. With a large and very cheerful crowd on hand, Mozambique Minister of Health, Dr. Ivo Garrido; USAID Mission Director Jay Knott; and the Chairman of the Roll Back Malaria program Bishop Dinis Sengulane presided over the ceremonies. Other guests included a World Health Organization (WHO) representative, Government of Mozambique officials and several other guests.

In Mozambique, PMI, with its partners UNICEF, WHO and Population Services International (PSI), has already begun a mass insecticide-treated net retreatment campaign with a goal of retreating approximately 500,000 nets, which could protect up to a million people. Retreating mosquito nets, especially during the rainy season when mosquitoes and malaria cases are on the increase, allows them to maintain their effectiveness as a malaria prevention tool that saves lives.
