- This video was made to celebrate 1500 kids who recently graduated from the English Access Microscholarship Program in Karachi. Access is a two-year after-school English language proficiency program for talented 14-18 year-olds from underprivileged and economically-disadvantaged sectors. The U.S. Embassy hosts the world’s largest English Access program.

- In Swat, USAID is funding the reconstruction of 78 militancy-affected schools, many of which are schools for girls. The school-building program, which also includes schools in Malakand, will benefit more than 16,000 students, including 9,000 girls.

The girls shared laughs, started a new conversation with on...e another, and encouraged each other to excel both on and off the soccer field. With a focus on peace building, the India-Pakistan soccer exchange also highlights the importance of using sports as a means of empowerment. Here, a local farmer from Aarokas village tells Ambassador Hoagland, “We had barren lands for many years due to water scarcity, but through the watershed management project we were able to convert our barren land into flush green fields.”

- In recognition of the International Day of the Girl Child, we bring you Rita: “My mother had lots of children and a hard life. She died young, so I brought up my brothers and sisters. I knew I didn’t want that life.” Says Rita. At an early ...age she realized the realities of violence, poverty and death growing up in the slums of Brazil. However, Rita didn’t let that get her down. - On October 8, high schools in Bagh, KPK observed the 7th anniversary of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, where large number of schools were totally destroyed. After the earthquake, the U.S. government, via USAID, started to reconstruct 27 schools out of which 15 have been completed. The U.S. also built 21 schools in the Mansehra district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, which was also badly affected by the earthquake.

- Nasa's Curiosity rover has only been on the surface of Mars seven weeks but it has already turned up evidence of past flowing water on the planet. Scientists on the mission team say the size and rounded shape of the pebbles in the rock indicate they had been transported and eroded in water.
