Creating a Refuge Conservation Plan for the Future, Wildlife and You

This year, we will work with local interests to develop a 15-year comprehensive conservation plan (CCP) for Chincoteague. The CCP will evaluate three alternative strategies for managing wildlife,  recreational uses, and other activities on the refuge.  Each alternative will include a recreational beach, beachside and offsite parking for visitors, and continuing management of the Chincoteague pony herd. With your involvement, we will develop a CCP that will ensure that Chincoteague remains a spectacular place for wildlife and a vacation destination. Final Phase of Assateague Lighthouse Restoration Begins

Lighthouse Restoration

On Tuesday, January 29, 2013, curious onlookers witnessed the construction of a 6 foot tall chain link fence, which now surrounds the historic Assateague Island Lighthouse.  The good news is preparations have begun for the final stage of its restoration which includes a fresh coat of paint. The bad news is lighthouse enthusiasts will not be able to access the interior of the historic structure for about four or five months.  That means the next available opportunity to climb to the top will occur sometime in June, if everything goes according to plan.
The chain link fence and other physical barriers have been installed to ensure public safety, while restoration work continues.  For that same reason, refuge staff members have cordoned off one of the two main walking trails leading to popular destination.
No need to fret. Visitors are still encouraged to make the trek to the historic site, using the one remaining trail access located adjacent to the lighthouse parking area.  And, vehicle access for mobility impaired visitors remains unchanged and available.
Be sure to bring your camera, because another half century or more may pass before this happens again.
Visit our website or follow us on twitter for restoration photos and project updates.
