SMS Text Messaging Alert System

On 1 February 2011, U.S. Embassy Bamako launched a new SMS Alert System so that American Citizens will be able to receive important alerts from the Embassy via text message on their mobile phones.

The SMS Alert System will not replace the current e-mail-based emergency system, but rather will enhance the availability of emergency messages to those without immediate access to a computer.  This new system will send a text message containing a brief description of urgent warden messages and prompt subscribers to check their e-mail for more details.

Enrollment in the SMS Alert System

Enrollment in the SMS Alert System is optional.  In order to enroll, U.S. citizens simply need to email the Consular Section their mobile phone number at acsbamako@state.gov using the subject line “Add Me to SMS.”

Disenrollment in the SMS Alert System

At any point, citizens may elect to leave the SMS Alert System by sending an e-mail to acsbamako@state.gov with the subject line “Remove Me from SMS” along with their mobile phone number.

Whether or not citizens enrolled with the U.S. Embassy decide to subscribe to the SMS alert system, they will continue to receive warden messages via e-mail, if enrolled in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program
