FAO Briefing on International Year of Forests 2011, February 9, 2011

International Year of Forests

International Year of Forests

The United Nations General Assembly’s goal this year is to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation, and sustainable development of all of the world’s forests. On February 9 th the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) presented a briefing on its recent publication State of the World’s Forests to mark 2011 as the International Year of Forests at their Rome headquarters. The presentation brought attention to four significant areas: the current state of forest resources; developing sustainable forest industries; the role of forests in climate change adaptation and mitigation; and the local value of forests.

FAO also presented an interactive communications toolkit on their website FAO.org with videos, photos, and themed forestry events for the media to use to engage the public throughout the year.
