2011 McGovern Lecturer, Roger Thurow, is ‘Raising the Clamor’

USUN Rome’s 9th Annual George McGovern Lecture at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) featured Roger Thurow, Senior Fellow on Global Agriculture and Food Policy at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs.  Mr. Thurow is also the co-author of “ENOUGH:  Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty.” The U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome, in partnership with FAO, established the George McGovern Lecture Series nine years ago to honor the legacy of United States Senator and former Ambassador to the U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome, George McGovern. honorably serving from 1998-2001.  George McGovern made tremendous contributions to the fight against world hunger including advancing programs for nutrition, agriculture and food security both in the United States and around the world.

This October 14, 2011 event featuring Roger Thurow was befitting of the McGovern legacy, considering Mr. Thurow’s commitment to ‘raising the clamor’ on the need to find sustainable agricultural solutions to ending global hunger.  Mr. Thurow, who spent 30 years as a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, now focuses all of his passion and energy on speaking and writing about tackling world hunger.  Addressing a diverse audience of students and professionals from many international organizations, Mr. Thurow advised that supporting “agricultural development of small-holder farmers is the great populous cause of this decade.”    He also encouraged the young students in the audience to “raise the clamor, spread the outrage and provide the inspiration” to find long-term sustainable solutions to ending hunger.
