Emergency Message to U.S. Citizens - Student Protests

December 14, 2011

U.S. Embassy Niamey, Niger

This warden message is to inform U.S. citizens of the recurring student protests in major cities in Niger, they are likely to continue.

There have been cases of protestors attacking cars and burning tires.  The Embassy recommends caution in moving around and would like to remind U.S. citizens to continue to exercise caution and avoid areas of protest activity.

We remind U.S. citizens that demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  The Embassy, therefore, urges U.S. citizens to avoid crowds, and street demonstrations, even if they appear to be peaceful, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.  U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surrounding at all times.
