Kidnapping Threat

The Embassy has confirmed that on September 16, five French nationals were kidnapped in Arlit, northern Niger.  Due to ongoing concerns about the possibility of kidnappings, Embassy Niamey continues to restrict the travel of U.S. Government employees and official visitors in areas north of Niamey.  The U.S. Embassy, therefore, reiterates that private U.S. citizens are strongly urged to avoid travel in the northern part of the country and to exercise caution in all travel outside of urban areas.
