Deputy Consul General Matt J. Matthews

Matt Matthews assumed his position as Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General Hong Kong on September 2, 2010. He most recently served as the Counselor for Economic Affairs at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Prior to his posting to KL, he was the Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra. Matt joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1986, and has served a substantial portion of his career in China related positions. He also has served in Beijing, AIT in Taipei, Islamabad, Pakistan and Washington, D.C. This assignment will bring him full circle, as his first tour in the Foreign Service was in Hong Kong in 1987. Matt grew up in Portland, Oregon, holds a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from the University of Oregon and an MA in International Relations from The John Hopkins University School of International Studies in Washington, D.C. He is married to Rachel Matthews and has two children who are currently studying and working in the U.S.
