Susan Elbow is the Deputy Chief of Mission in the U.S. Embassy in Bern, Switzerland. Prior to her posting in Bern, she was Director of the U.S. State Department’s European Regional Media Center in Brussels, Belgium. A member of the U.S. Diplomatic Service since 1986, she has served as the Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia; Principal Officer in the U.S. Consulate in Hamburg, Germany; Senior Watch Officer in the State Department’s Operations Center; Press Officer in the European Bureau of the State Department; Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary; Cultural Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador, El Salvador; and as Assistant Director of the Amerika Haus in Frankfurt, Germany.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ms. Elbow worked at the Port Authority of NY & New Jersey as Director of Marketing for the World Trade Centers Network, a trading and communications network, linking World Trade Centers around the globe. She has an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, an M.A. from the University of Rochester, and a B.A. from Smith College. She speaks German, Hungarian, Spanish, and conversational French and Serbian.
Susan Elbow ist seit September 2011 Stellvertreterin des Missionschefs der Botschaft der Vereinigten Staaten in Bern. Davor hielt sie die Position als Direktorin für das Europäische Medien Zentrum des U.S. Aussenministeriums in Brüssel inne. Dieses völlig neuartige Zentrum mit eigenem Radio- und Fernsehstudio hat zum Ziel, europäisches Publikum über die U.S. Aussenpolitik zu informieren und Interviews mit hochrangigen offiziellen Persönlichkeiten über traditonelles Fernsehen und die neuen Medien auszustrahlen.
Seit 1986 ist Frau Elbow Mitglied des diplomatischen Dienstes der USA. Von 1987 bis 1998 hielt sie diverse Positionen in Washington, Budapest, San Salvador und Frankfurt als Kultur- und Presseattachée inne. Von 2000 bis 2001 übernahm sie eine Führungstätigkeit im „Operations Center“ in Washington und war für die permanente Betreuung der Chefbeamten verantwortlich. In dieser Tätigkeit war sie ebenfalls für die Informationsauswertung während Krisensituationen verantwortlich. Von 2001 bis 2004 war sie Generalkonsulin mit Sitz in Hamburg und zuständig für fünf Bundesländern. Von 2005 bis 2007 arbeitete sie als Beraterin des Botschafters und gestaltete die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit der U.S. Botschaft in Belgrad.
Bevor Frau Elbow dem diplomatischen Dienst beitrat, war sie Marketingdirektorin des World Trade Centers und Managementmitarbeiterin des Hafens von New York und New Jersey. Sie schloss an der Universität Harvard einen Master in öffentlicher Verwaltung und Geschichte ab.
Nebst ihrer Muttersprache Englisch spricht sie Deutsch, Ungarisch, Spanisch, Französisch und Serbisch.
