    Burst of Color in Hatay!

    American Graffiti Artist Caleb Neelon was in Hatay last week as part of a U.S. Embassy program to highlight American pop culture. Caleb Neelon was joined by art students of Mustafa Kemal University and alumni of our Social Entrepreneurship Undergraduate and Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship programs. During the week students had the opportunity to learn about the history of graffiti and even tried making some graffiti themselves!

    Critical Language Scholarship Program Participant Speaks Turkish

    This summer, 60 American college students studied Turkish in Bursa, Izmir, and Ankara as part of the State Department's Critical Language Scholarship Program. The students spent time learning Turkish in an intensive academic environment and living with host families. For Lisa, this program was a chance for her to become more fluent in Turkish and help her in preparing her doctoral thesis.

    Embassy Sponsored Tourism Project Highlights the Treasures of Kars

    In July 45 tourism students from the United States, Turkey, and Armenia came together to look at ways of promoting tourism in Turkey's northeast region. The project which took place in Kars gave these students the opportunity to learn about promoting tourism, cultural diversity, and environmentally friendly programs. For the past few months these students and their professors have been connected virtually using social media. The project was an excellent opportunity for them to come together and see a fascinating region in Turkey. Students from the University of Florida, Dokuz Eylul University (Izmir), and Armenia State University of Economics (Yerevan) participated in the project.

    The U.S. Women's Deaf National Soccer Team are the World Champions!

    The U.S. beat Russia 1-0 on Saturday to win the gold at the 2nd Deaf World Football Championship. Ambassador Ricciardone and his wife Dr. Ricciardone were at the match to cheer the team on. Now three-time gold medal winners, the women have been undefeated since they began competing internationally in 2005.

The students participated on the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad and National Security Language Initiative- Youth (NSLI-Y) programs. Tom Coleman, of the U.S. Embassy Ankara’s Economic Section, visited and congratulated second-prize winners Kerem Çalışkan and Salih Eren Parlakgümüş.

    U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone and Dr. Marie Ricciardone paid a cultural visit to Denizli on May 16. Following their meeting with Denizli Mayor Abdulkadir Demir, Ambassador Ricciardone and Dr. Ricciardone visited artists displaying their sculptures at the Second International Sculpture Colony, organized by Komurcuoglu Marble Company. They viewed the art works; had a chat with U.S., Chinese, Cuban, Japanese and Turkish sculptors; then had a tour of the marble factory.

    Helicopter Delivery Displays Turkish- American Partnership

    On May 1, 2012, a Turkish Air Force UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was loaded onto a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. A U.S. C-17 aircrew based in New Jersey, U.S.A. transported the helicopter to Kabul, Afghanistan four days later. This helicopter replaces the one that was tragically lost in December 2011 and highlights the importance of U.S.-Turkish cooperation in the NATO effort in Afghanistan.

    Dr. Esther Brimmer, Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, spoke to a group of students in a class on International Organizations at Bilkent University. She gave remarks on how the Obama administration has approached foreign policy in an increasingly interconnected world, emphasizing the importance of multilateral engagement among countries and in the UN system.

    Ambassador Ricciardone Hosts Reception in Honor of Safak Pavey

    Ambassador Ricciardone hosted a reception on March 22, 2012 in honor of Safak Pavey who recently received State Department’s “2012 International Women of Courage Award.” Pavey, the first disabled female deputy to be elected to the Parliament, was honored with an award for championing the rights of the disabled in Turkey. Ambassador Ricciardone, speaking at the reception, said Pavey has been an inspiration for not only Turks or women but all around the world.

    American famous jazz musician Dena DeRose was at Yaşar University for a five week long Fulbright senior specialist program with the support of the US Embassy, Ankara. She taught contemporary vocal and piano techniques to young musicians at Yaşar University`s newly established jazz department. She also worked closely with faculty members and administrators on curriculum development.

    American puppet artist Larry Hunt and his "Masque Theater" performed "Blues Blues" at the Izmir International Puppet Days with the support of the US Embassy on March 5-7-8. "Blues Blues" is a 45 minute long non-verbal play great for kids over 7.

    One of the great living drummers Dave Weckl played together with 'Buzuki Orhan' and Turkophony All Stars during Ankara Jazz Festival which is supported by the U.S. Embassy Ankara. The audience had great time listening to Weckl and the band who mixed Turkish rhythms with Western Beats.
