USAID programs on youth-centered activities and policies

Navigating Challenges. Charting Hope.

The U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Uganda Ministry of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, has released a new study to inform its programming on youth-centered activities and policies.

In April 2011, USAID funded IYF, FHI 360 and the Centre for Basic Research to conduct the YouthMap Uganda study, covering urban, rural, and peri-urban areas in twelve districts: Butaleja, Gulu, Kabale, Kampala, Kamwenge, Kotido, Luwero, Masindi, Mbale, Nakapiripirit, Namutumba, and Nebbi. More than 1,000 young people and 180 public, private, civil society and donor stakeholders participated in the study. The findings highlight the vulnerability of young Ugandans, especially those affected by conflict, HIV/AIDS, or disabilities, and exposed to drugs and alcohol abuse. With more than 78 percent of the Ugandan population under the age of 30, the topics addressed by the youth assessment will profoundly influence the country's future.
