This is a patch upgrade to CalDB which includes a correction to the ACIS branch index file to include ACIS CONTAM N0006 listings for ACIS-8 and ACIS-9. This prevents an ARDLIB initialization error for observations taken since 2011-01-01T00:00:00 (UTC). This update resolves the incompatibility problem with the CONTAMI_TRANS introduced in XIS update 20110118. 2011 February 10

The Suzaku CALDB XIS update (version 20110118) includes new CONTAMI_TRANS files which are incompatible with the XIS tools released in the current version of HEASoft (28Sep2010_V6.10). These tools will be updated in a forthcoming HEASoft release. In the meantime Suzaku users should re-set their local CALDBs to the 20101108 version of the XIS caldb. To do this, go to $CALDB/data/suzaku/xis and change the caldb.indx symbolic link to point to the file $CALDB/data/suzaku/xis/index/caldb.indx20101108. This has already been done for the SUZAKU XIS Caldb at the HEASARC for remote CALDB users. We will announce here and on the caldb rss feed when a new XIS caldb is available.

The Chandra X-ray Center in conjunction with the the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory have set up a mirror of the HEASARC CALDB. The mirror is available from ftp://cda.cfa.harvard.edu/pub/arcftp/heasarc/caldb/.

Some users are continuing to experience problems with remote access to the HEASARC CALDB with $CALDB=ftp://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov. The nature of the problem is that the remote connection times out without returning any information. We are investigating this issue, but in the meantime, we recommend users set their CALDB environment variable to $CALDB=http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/FTP/caldb

The gtcalf.f subroutine doesn't return remote files if the $CALDB begins with "http://". This affects users who are using remote access to the HEASARC caldb. Routines that use gtcalf (like quzcif) will identify but not download data files if $CALDB is set to http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/FTP/caldb. Users can try defining $CALDB as $CALDB = ftp://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov but may run into GSFC firewall problems if this definition is used). This will be fixed in a future update.

The XTE CALDB has been updated for the HEXTE instrument. A new file, cpf/bkg/corr_ab_std.fits has been added. This file give coefficients used to predict the background in cluster A from the observed background in cluster B. The Swift CALDB has been updated for the general spacecraft (SC) data and the UVOTA. This is a general re-build of the UVOTA caldb; users of the UVOTA caldb should completely remove or delete the current UVOTA caldb (the 20051118 version) before untarring the update tar file.

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) will add another leap second at the end of 2005. The CALDB leap seconds file has been updated to include the leap second which will occur just before 2006-01-01, as given in ftp://hpiers.obspm.fr/iers/bul/bulc/bulletinc.dat. The file $CALDB/gen/bcf/leapsec_010905.fits has been added, and the caldb.indx file updated.

A new "Supported Missions" page has been created. This page gives a link to pages which summarize the individual "good" files contained in each caldb.indx file for each supported instrument.
Caldb index summary pages for each supported mission are now available. These pages list the unique "good" files contained in the caldb.indx files for each instrument.

The document "The Calibration Requirements for Spectral Analysis" (CAL/GEN 92-002) has been updated to clarify that the order of extensions is not significant in the RMF and ARF FITS files.
A bug has been identified in the caltools task CMPRMF in which the LO_THRES keyword in the output file is not being updated in the current HEASOFT (5.3.1). This is being corrected.
The page which lists the supported missions/instruments has been updated.

The FTOOLS patch release 5.3.1 fixes a problem with the remote access of the CALDB. (This problem occurred because of security updates to the GSFC network.)
