The eastern tropcial Pacific Ocean roughly extends from San Diego west to Hawaii and south to Peru and is one of the most productive tropical oceans in the world. Research at the SWFSC in the region is focused on assessment of the status and socio-economics of highly migratory species such as tunas, billfishes and sharks; the status of the dolphin stocks which have been taken as incidental catch by the yellowfin tuna purse-seine fishery; the ecology of the seabird populations; and the status, fishery interactions and socio-economics of the marine turtle populations.
