GOES-R Training Approach
The slide package “GOES and GOES-R Satellite Meteorology Education Activities and Resources” (download below) covers the highlights of GOES-R related training available from several sources. The GOES-R Program Office welcomes comments from the user communities on available training and recommendations for additional needs. Please send your comments and suggestions to james.gurka@noaa.gov

The primary sources for education on GOES-R are the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training COMET, the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration and Training (VISIT), the Satellite Hydrometeorology Course (SHyMet), and NOAA’s and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere’s (CIRA’s) activities in support of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Virtual Laboratory.

COMET was established to promote a better understanding of mesoscale meteorology and to maximize the benefits of new weather technologies. Today, the COMET Program addresses education and training needs in the atmospheric and related sciences. The primary venue for GOES related training is through distance learning. COMET produces and delivers online, interactive professional development materials that also serve as readily available reference resources. These are available at no cost on the MetEd website.

The COMET Program has worked closely with NESDIS since 1997 to support GOES, POES, and NPOESS (now JPSS). The program has produced more than 50 satellite specific educational modules containing well over 100 hours of instruction. Many modules are available in Spanish or French. COMET has also included satellite data and products in much of its entire library of over 320 education modules.

The VISIT Program, composed of elements from CIRA and CIMSS, as well as staff in NESDIS and the National Weather Service (NWS), has supported NESDIS education and training needs since 1999. The program was created to accelerate the transfer of research results based on environmental remote sensing into NOAA operations. The VISIT program takes advantage of educational resources available through the COMET Program, CIRA, CIMSS, and the NWS Training Division.

The SHyMet is a course dedicated to operational satellite meteorology, consisting of 14 lessons and funded by NESDIS. Most of the lessons are taught via distance earning using Web modules and teletraining. SHyMet also utilizes the training resources available through the COMET Program. The various components are organized using Commerce/NOAA Learning Center (CLC). The CLC provides the structure to organize the instructional components into cohesive lessons. The Learning Management System (LMS) provides access to the SHyMet course materials for all NOAA employees along with registration, scheduling, testing and evaluation tools. Upon successful completion of each lesson, the CLC provides a link to a completion certificate and automatically sends an e-mail notice to the supervisor.

The WMO Virtual Laboratory Regional Focus Group activities are organized by CIRA, the NWS Training Division, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) international desk, and the WMO Regional Training Centers in Costa Rica and Barbados.  CIRA and the NCEP international desk conduct monthly weather briefings in English and Spanish using the Internet for voice and to analyze various satellite based products at no cost to the participants. The “Introduction to GOES-R” lesson was presented to the Virtual Lab Group in November of 2011.
