About the Program

The Post-traumatic Stress Disorders Assessment & Treatment program provides services to veterans of all eras who experienced trauma. Most of our patients have combat trauma, however, this is not required for treatment. Our patients also include those who experienced childhood traumas, sexual trauma, trauma from accidents, and other forms of catastrophic experiences. Treatment is provided in both outpatient and residential settings and requires that veterans assume responsibility for their recovery. The goals of the program are to decrease distress and to help the veteran create healthier living patterns using efficacy based psychoeducation, cognitive behavioral, and coping skills interventions.

Services Offered

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation to clarify each patient’s problems and needs.  This evaluation includes a thorough interview, psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing, and occasionally referrals to other hospital providers.  Based on your assessment outpatient treatment options may include several of the following:

• Psychoeducation about PTSD
• Group Therapy (Anger, Coping Skills)
• Family Therapy
• Intensive Individual Therapy
• Medication Management

The Residential PTSD Treatment Program

The Residential PTSD programs are comprised of two intensive 7-week programs for men and women veterans and an intensive 8 week program for veterans with both PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Each program  provides assessment and brief treatment of PTSD. During their first week in the program, patients receive a multidisciplinary assessment to evaluate their readiness for the program. The trauma is addressed using Cognitive Processing Therapy (or CPT-C without trauma processing in the PTSD/TBI program) in individual and group sessions. Additional therapy groups include, Anger Management, Relaxation Skill Training, Assertiveness Training, Distress Tolerance, Communication Training, Sleep Management, and Health Issues. Patients in the PTSD/TBI program receive additional services including a full neuropsychological examination, speech pathology evaluation and treatment, and occupational and physical therapy as needed.

Admissions Procedures

Admission to either the residential or outpatient programs begins with a consult.  If you are interested in a referral, please speak to your VA practitioner.  A screening interview will be required as a condition of admission.  A clinician referral packet is also required of veterans who are applying to the residential program.

Men and women veterans of all eras are eligible for both programs.  To be considered for admission to either program, veterans must be willing to actively participate in their treatment.  In addition, veterans must complete all homework assignments and meet the following criteria:

• Veterans must supply a copy of their DD-214.
