SECRETARY OF DEFENSE 5000-WORD TRANSFORMATION ESSAY CATEGORY
CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF STRATEGIC ESSAY COMPETITION
This competition challenges students through the joint professional military education (JPME) institutions to write scholarly research papers or essays about significant aspects of national security strategy.

Given by the Airlift/Tanker Association for outstanding research in the field of global mobility.
LIEUTENANT GENERAL JOHN M. NOWAK AWARD FOR LOGISTICS
Given by AF/IL for the best paper addressing significant and contemporary logistics issues or challenges relevant to current and future Air Force readiness and combat capability.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP INNOVATION AWARD
Presented by the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) for the research paper with the most original contribution to senior leader development or understanding issues of interest to 21st century leaders. Formerly titled Military Officers Association of America Leadership Award.
JOINT AIRPOWER AWARD
Given for the outstanding paper on the joint employment of airpower in support of national military strategy. Through 2011, titled Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association Award.
HOMELAND SECURITY AND DEFENSE AWARD
Presented by USNORTHCOM for the best paper that addresses relevant issues in homeland security.
THOMAS “DUTCH” MILLER AWARD
Given by the USAF Counterproliferation Center for the research paper that makes the most original contribution to understanding counterproliferation issues.
GENERAL CHARLES A. HORNER AWARD
Presented by the USAF Counterproliferation Center for the best study if an issue of most immediate and important utility to the US counterproliferation program.
AIR FORCE SPACE COMMAND AWARD
Presented by Air Force Space Command for the outstanding paper addressing space doctrine, operations, policy, or strategy
AIR FORCE CYBER AWARD
Presented by 8th Air Force for the outstanding paper on the development of thinking within the cyberspace domain
RESERVE COMPONENT AWARD (New in AY11)
Presented by the Reserve Officers Association for the best research providing a greater understanding of the reserve component’s role in national security
MILITARY OPERATIONS OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AWARD
