Mauritius is one of the most economically successful and politically stable countries in Africa, with a per capita income of over $8,500.  Mauritius’s small size understates its importance to the Indian Ocean region, as it controls an extensive Exclusive Economic Zone of 2.38 million sq km and is well positioned as a gateway to both Africa and South Asia.  For the fourth consecutive year, the World Bank’s 2012 Doing Business report ranks Mauritius first among African economies (23rd worldwide, out of 183 economies) in terms of overall ease of doing business.

The United States and Mauritius signed a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement in 2006, and every year delegations from both governments meet to discuss ways of strengthening and expanding trade and investment relations between our two countries.  Moreover, negotiations are ongoing for a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT), which we expect to sign in 2012.  The BIT will provide additional protection to and further encourage investment flows between the United States and Mauritius.
