U.S. Embassy press Attaché Philip Breeden and Andrew Green, head of Library Services for Wandsworth

As part of this month's London Festival of Architecture, Battersea Park library is hosting an exhibition showing the winning design for the new American embassy planned for Nine Elms.  The exhibition is part of the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to actively engage with the residents of Wandsworth, as the project progresses.

On June 22, U.S. Embassy press attaché Philip Breeden gave a talk at the library to 40 local residents to outline how the Nine Elms site was chosen, how the design was developed, and how the new building hopes to contribute to the Nine Elms regeneration project.  

He explained how KieranTimberlake’s ideas met the brief of creating a modern, welcoming, timeless, safe and energy efficient embassy for the 21st century and detailed how the concept aims for a carbon-neutral building on the leading edge of sustainable design.  KieranTimberlake is known for its commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Since being founded in 1984, the firm has received more than one hundred design citations, including the Architecture Firm Award in 2008, the highest honor given by the American Institute of Architects.
 

To coincide with the exhibition, the library is also hosting a series of American themed events.   For children aged between five and ten there is a competition to design an American Garden. This is being run in partnership with the parks service, which is working to remodel the ‘American Ground’ area in Battersea Park.

And those aged 11 to 16 are being challenged to write a poem, song or rap celebrating America or all things American.

The activities at Battersea Park Library culminate in a celebration on Saturday, July 3 to mark American Independence Day. At this event, the winners of the two competitions will also be announced. For full details of all these events ring the library on (020) 8871 7468.
